line drawing and first strokes

Tentatively titled "Young at Heart," this is the first oil (24x24 inches) from the Pt. Defiance Park reference photos. Above: the charcoal line drawing on white gessoed wood panel. Below: the first strokes for value and mass.

  1. Hi Barbara,
I love these process posts! Do you fix your charcoal before you paint, or do you just let it mix in with the umber and then brush off the excess when it is dry?
    Thank you,
    Chris Gedye

  2. Hi Chris,
    I love process posts too.

I just paint over the charcoal and it hasn't been a problem.

As I typed that, I wondered if you post processes on your blog so I just signed up to get emails when you post!
    Regards, Barbara
