Mid October check-in

Does anyone read blogs anymore? I wonder. Am I writing this for you or for me? For both of us I think because I plan to read this blog when I am old. When I am old...ha! This is my birthday month and as always, a time of introspection for me. 

This morning I spent some time with "Monet at Étretat" (a gift from My Biggest Fan) and though I got only as far as the Director's Foreword by Amada Cruz, already I have come to meaningful words that apply to me. 

Cruz writes that Monet's time at Étretat was a difficult personal and professional endeavor whose outcome was uncertain and that he was initially unsatisfied with his work. There is loneliness in a quest to forge new artistic territory in an authentic and meaningful way. I am reminded that as artists, we share a common bond of creativity and all its challenges and joys. Though I am alone in my Studio today, trying to figure out what to do with a painting that has been waiting resolution for many months, I feel kinship with all artists, including Monet. It comforts and reassures me.

Another attitude adjustment

I have fancy plein air equipment that I have collected over the years. It is in nearly new condition because though I've used it occasionally with pastel, oil, and even watercolor, I have not become a fan of painting plein air. Or, at least I wasn't until today.

This morning I took my Open Box M (recently converted to hold a State-Wet palette for acrylic) outside the Studio to the flower garden. There isn't much left out there except the sunflower sentinels with their bowed heads.  

After painting the small floral still life set-ups in my studio for the past couple months, this open-air experience was unexpectedly freeing. Wheee! What fun. Big brush, big strokes. Surprisingly, by the time I  had had enough (about 15 minutes) I was happy with the result and was feeling I may have found the plein air medium that suits me. A couple things contributed to success: 

1. The goal was to paint an image that will inform a larger, Studio work. 

2. I like to paint fast and acrylic dries quickly so I can make corrections and adjustments. And, I don't have to stand at my easel outdoors very long (I'd rather be weeding).

If you have tried acrylic and/or plein air painting and aren't a fan, consider giving them another try. 

Wax and Buff

Upon completion of an acrylic painting, I let it cure for several days. An isolation coat of 2:1 Golden Soft Gel Gloss and water is applied. Several days after that I apply a thin layer of Gamblin wax, wait 24 hours and then buff to a shine that appears more organic to me than synthetic gloss varnish.

Thanks everyone for your support of my 30-painting Acrylic Project. Here are the paintings that went to new homes. A couple went into the trash and a few more have an undecided fate.

I think I've become addicted to acrylic.  Since the project ended a few days ago, I have painted five more.

I had no idea these little florals would sell within 24 hours of me posting them so they were not ready to ship for about a week. The acrylic must cure, then an isolation coat applied, then wax and then buff. All with time in between. I still have four paintings waiting wax and buffing. If one of them is yours, it will ship Monday, September 20th Priority Mail.

I won't post the new paintings until they are ready to ship so new purchases should ship out the next day. Watch for them around October 1.  I will be happy to ship to another US address if the painting you purchase is a gift.

The Acrylic Project #18 - #24 and FAQs

I'm still working on The Acrylic Project and have 6 paintings to go to reach my goal of 30. I've learned so much about this medium! I post these paintings on my website and on Instagram and I am so appreciative of the warm response they have received. I think I have gained a new group of acquaintances:  Acrylic Artists. 

FAQ: The palette I'm using is a Masterson Sta-Wet - the new model with the little cups for paint. My old Sta-Wet was a mess. I posted both on my Instagram page bbnewtonartstudio.

FAQ: After the acrylic paint cures for several days, I apply an isolation barrier. A few days after that, I wax and buff the painting. I like the organic look of the wax more than the synthetic look of varnish. See instructions on bbnewtonartstudio.

FAQ: The little vase I'm using was a gift from one of my co-workers when I "retired" after 16 years at K2 Skis on Vashon Island, WA.

Checking in with you on my acrylic project. I'm a little more than 1/2 way through and I think I'm starting to get the hang of this medium. Accept acrylic for what it is, let go of my expectations and go with the flow. Attitude is everything in painting and in life. Change your attitude, love the one you're with and before you know it, annoying idiosyncrasies become endearing qualities. 

This is my favorite part! Sending these little paintings off to new homes makes room in the Studio for more paintings. By the way, "Love is Blind" and "We Got This" are available. Click on each image to purchase.

The Acrylic Project continued...

 I'm still at it. A nice woman who purchased one of my paintings sent me a photo of how she has it displayed in her home. She agreed to have the photo shared with you.

I love it! It didn't occur to me that it could be left unframed. What a great idea. Thanks so much, Brie for sharing this with me. Because of this, I am now painting my edges...sorry I didn't think of it before.

These little paintings have been a joy and also a challenge. One day I had a meltdown and painted over a couple. It really is all about my attitude. Through The Acrylic Project I have met new purchasers and other artists willing to share tips about the medium and supplies. I have received a glowing review of my work in general (once again, thank you Brie!) and have even heard from a few artists who may try acrylic again.

So I changed my attitude...

Every couple years I return to acrylic in an attempt to bond with that medium (no pun intended). I know the problem isn't the medium, it's me.

This time around, I am giving acrylics more respect. I have set up a separate work station just for them I have given them recognition as The Acrylic Project 2021.

Here is Number 1, title "So I Changed My Attitude."  I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised about what a difference a change of attitude makes! I enjoyed the process and am pleased with the result.

Life is getting back to the normal of a few years ago for me. With more opportunities to show work in places other than online, and because I've had a great year selling larger paintings, I have been re-thinking the direction of my work for the coming year. I will be painting larger for the foreseeable future. 

In small-format, I will offer prints of original art on DailyPaintworks and on Etsy.

Prints, anyone?

I have been getting many inquiries lately about prices of my paintings and also am learning that there seems to be a demand for prints of my work (again). I used to sell prints but at some point I ran out of inventory and didn't go there again. Until today. Offering my first new print in my new "store" (BBNewton DPW Store) on my DPW Gallery website.

 

Reworking an 8 year old recluse

Look what I found tucked behind my pastel easel. Arboretum Winter Color painted in 2013. It got as far as framing but then I unframed it to have it photographed for one of my print publishers. Because it was quite large, I tucked it safely away against the wall, unframed, and forgot about it. When I came across it last week, it begged to be reworked.

Took some liberties with the scene and color and reworked the painting. I am interested to see how my pastel strokes have matured in eight years. Very happy with the new version.

Getting back to normal

 Ahh...things are beginning to get back to normal for artists. There are opportunities to show art in-person in addition to online. Because of that, I've been framing work for "Small Packages" at Women Painters of Washington (WPW) Gallery and for the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists (PSG) Summer Sale.

 

Left to right: 4 framed paintings for the PSG Summer Sale (see link below), 5 paintings for WPW, and a small pastel that has been entered into a show, waiting notification of acceptance. The large painting of a child is by my long-ago mentor and Northwest art legend, William Cumming.
